Is it absolutely necessary to mention position I'm applying for in the 1st sentence of internship cover letter?

I know that is how it is usually done but when I try that, I end up starting the letter with an "I" or some other uninteresting way that I was advised against. Could I just start with an interesting part about my experience and note the specific internship program at the end of the the first paragraph. I am sending this to a specific intern coordinator through an internship-specific email so I do not see how they would expect anything but a regular internship application.
