How do u get a boat to run?

my uncle and I have just bought a 1988 thunder cat 100 hp boat. we can get it to start in N. however, when we try to put it into gear it dies. is there a switch or something that needs to be flipped or adjust the idler? if it needs to be adjusted where is it located on the motor? by the way, the motor is a 2.3 ford
