What does Nehru Jacket signify ?

What do you think does the famous Nehru jacket or Band gala coat signify. Why did Nehru chose this when other Indian politicians wore the traditional Indian kurta and dhoti. The material with which the coat was made then was Khaki. Why so ??????????
