Traffic ticket volunteer question?

I got a ticket a while back and chose to do volunteer work instead of paying the full fine because I'm just a student. The question I wanted to ask is do we need a specific form to show that I did my volunteer time or can we just let the volunteer coordinator sign a paper that I did it and show it to the traffic clerk? Btw this is in California.
